TELANGIECTASIA (BROKEN CAPILLARIES)

Telangiectasia:

  • Are dilated blood vessels that occur in areas of sun damage, especially on the cheeks and around the nose.
  • Another type of blood vessel "cherry hemangiomas" may develop anywhere on the body as the skin matures.
  • Are NOT cancerous and NEVER develop into a skin cancer.
  • Appear as bright or deep red fine lines. On the body they appear as bright red, round 2 mm to 5 mm flat marks or dome-shaped bumps
  • May be caused by hormones or sun damage
  • May get gradually larger and increase in number with time
  • Do not disappear spontaneously.
  • The only way to prevent developing this lesions is to wear a good sunscreen.

Treatment:

  • Are most easily treated with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
  • There is no cream at this time that will remove spider Angiomas.
  • The treatments 'sting' and the area treated may remain pink for 1 to 2 hours.
  • The treatment may produce small crusts. This is normal.
  • Apply a small amount of antibiotic ointment to the areas treated for 1 week.
  • You may bathe normally.
  • A bandage is not necessary.
  • Treatment of telangiectasia is not covered by OHIP or private health insurance.
  • There is a small risk that the treatment may produce permanent white marks (scars).
  • As an added bonus, IPL treatment also improve brown freckling, shrinks pores, improves sun damage and increases collagen in the skin. All of these lead to smoother, younger looking skin and reduced redness at the same time.
  • If you are not currently a patient, a referral from another physician is required for electrocautery treatments with the doctor.
