Tinea Versicolour (Pityriasis Versicolour)

General Information:

  • Is caused by a yeast called Malassezia furfur.
  • The yeast is a beige colour and produces flaky beige spots on the trunk, neck, arms and legs.
  • The yeast produces a chemical which prevents tanning of the skin. This causes the skin to produce white spots. These are not scars.
  • It is not contagious.
  • It is not dangerous.
  • It does not scar or leave permanent marks.
  • The yeast lives in the environment around us.
  • The infection is not due to poor hygiene.

Treatment:

  • A variety of creams, pills and shampoos are available.
