General Information:

Leukonychia:

  • Are nails with tiny 1 mm to 3 mm white marks on the surface.
  • Is caused by minor injury to the root of the nail.
  • Will grow out slowly with time.
  • Is NOT due to a vitamin deficiency.
  • Is NOT a fungus.
  • Is NOT due to calcium deficiency.
  • Is NOT contagious.
  • Is harmless.

Treatment:

  • Avoid injuring the nails as much as possible.
  • Do not push back or trim your cuticles.
  • Vitamin supplements will not help.
  • Calcium supplements will NOT help.  There is normally no calcium in nail tissue.
  • No treatment is necessary.
  • If the nails are a cosmetic concern, they may be covered with nail polish.
