Sebaceous Hyperplasia for Hamilton, Grimsby and Stoney Creek

General Information:

  • Are due to sebaceous glands (oil glands) becoming enlarged as they mature
  • Are not 'cysts' which can be 'squeezed' or 'popped' out
  • Are not due to diet
  • Are not warts
  • Are not contagious
  • Are not due to cosmetics or make-up
  • Are not 'cholesterol' or fat deposits
  • Usually develop on the forehead and cheeks

Treatment:

  • A finely tipped electrical device(cautery) is applied to each spot
  • The treatment stings and feels very hot, but it completed in a few seconds
  • The spots become crusted and heal over a period of 2 to 5 days
  • A small amount of antibiotic ointment is applied daily until the areas are healed
  • Make-up can be applied the next day
  • The face can be washed normally
  • There is no limitation to exercise, bathing or showering after treatment
  • There is a small chance that the same gland may re-appear
  • It is normal to continue to develop new sebaceous hyperplasia with time
  • Rarely, a small white mark may be left at the site of treatment
  • A new treatment called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) - Fotofacial is available for sebaceous hyperplasia. It works better than electrocautery for very small glands and background redness of the skin. As an added bonus it also treats brown freckling, removes broken blood vessels (telangiectasia), shrinks pores, improves sun damage and increases collagen in the skin. All of these lead to smoother, younger looking skin and reduced size of the oil glands at the same time. To learn more about IPL click here
  • If you are not currently a patient, a referral from another physician is required for electrocautery treatments with the doctor
  • If you are interested in a free consultation regarding IPL with one of our aesthetic assistants, a referral is NOT necessary
