Doctor V interviews Medical Aesthetic Technician Laura about microdermabrasion.

Laura has been working in our aesthetic centre for two years.  She performs IPL fotofacials, Blue light therapy, laser hair removal, chemical peels microdermabrasion and medical facials.  She has performed numerous treatments and I have asked her to answer some commonly asked questions.

Doctor V: What do patients enjoy most about microdermabrasion?

Laura:  One of the things patients enjoy most about microdermabrasion is that it is a very effective form of exfoliation with great rejuvenating benefits, but without the downtime or side effects of some of the more aggressive treatments available.  Patients see marked improvement to their skin but can have the treatment done even over their lunch hour without having to change their regular routine.  I also think patients find the treatment very enjoyable and relaxing to have done, as it includes a rehydrating mask and facial massage after the exfoliation.

Doctor V: How long does the treatment take?

Laura:  Microdermabrasion takes approximately 45-60 minutes depending on the skin type and any conditions present.

Doctor V: What do you enjoy most about doing a micro?

Laura:  It is rewarding as a technician to have my patients see real improvements to their skin, and I am glad that they receive benefit from a recommendation that I’ve made.  It is also very interesting for me to have contact with so many different skin types and conditions.  It is rewarding to work with these skin types and conditions directly and to be an aid in the process of correcting different concerns.

Doctor V: For whom would you recommend a microdermabrasion vs. a peel?

Laura:  I would recommend a micro to a patient who is simply looking to maintain the integrity of their skin or to help alleviate some minor problems such as impurities, congestion, or a devitalized, dull appearance.  Microdermabrasion is also great to help to even the tone of the skin, to correct minor texture problems with the skin, and to create a more youthful appearance. I recommend chemical peels for patients who have more complicated concerns – things like moderate to severe acne, acne scarring, or pigmentation problems due to sun damage.

Doctor V: How often do most people have microdermabrasion done?

Laura:  The majority of patients see the best improvement to their skin when they are on a regular maintenance schedule of having a treatment approximately once every 4 to 6 weeks.
