Melasma (Cholasma)

General Information:

  • Melasma is pigmentation that occurs on the upper lip, cheeks, forehead and chin.
  • Melasma is sometimes also known by the name Cholasma or "the mask of pregnancy."
  • It may be caused by female hormones, hormone replacement, the birth control pill, pregnancy or other medications.
  • Sometimes there is no obvious cause.
  • Sun exposure is extremely important in causing the pigmentation to occur and to come back after treatment.

Treatment:

  • There is a wide variety of skin lightening creams available over the counter
  • You must use a good sunscreen every day, even if it is cloudy. Even a small amount of sun exposure can reverse the effects of the skin lightening creams.
  • Avoid the outdoors between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM when the sun is strongest.
  • Wear a broad brimmed hat.
  • Physician strength lactic peels or microdermabrasion are also used to reduce the pigmentation.
  • In some cases IPL Fotofacials are also used to treat excess pigmentation.
