Leukonychia:
- Are nails with tiny 1 mm to 3 mm white marks on the surface.
- Is caused by minor injury to the root of the nail.
- Will grow out slowly with time.
- Is NOT due to a vitamin deficiency.
- Is NOT a fungus.
- Is NOT due to calcium deficiency.
- Is NOT contagious.
- Is harmless.
Treatment:
- Avoid injuring the nails as much as possible.
- Do not push back or trim your cuticles.
- Vitamin supplements will not help.
- Calcium supplements will NOT help. There is normally no calcium in nail tissue.
- No treatment is necessary.
- If the nails are a cosmetic concern, they may be covered with nail polish.
