General Information:
Syringomas
- Are due to overgrowth of a portion of sweat glands in the skin.
- Are most common on the lower eyelids, but may also occur on upper eyelids and the cheeks.
- Rarely may appear on the arms, legs and trunk.
- Are not cancerous.
- Are not warts.
- Are not contagious.
- May sometimes be inherited from other family members (genetic).
- Are not 'fat deposits'.
- Are not 'calcium deposits'.
- Are not 'cholesterol deposits'.
- Are not due to diet.
- Are not due to makeup.
- Are of no danger.
Treatment:
Electrocautery:
- The skin adjacent to the syringomas is injected with a local anesthetic to numb the area.
- The injection stings for a few seconds.
- After this, there is no pain or discomfort.
- The syringomas are then treated with a fine electrical instrument (electrocautery) which feels hot to touch.
- As the area is numb from the anesthetic, the treatments are not painful.
- Bleeding is rare.
- Stitches are not necessary.
- Bandages are not necessary.
- After the procedure you may bathe normally.
- For 1 week after the procedure, apply a small amount of antibiotic cream twice daily.
- The lesions turn into small crusts or scabs which fall off spontaneously after about 1 week.
- This will produce a pink mark that will gradually fade and flatten.
- The flat areas usually blend in with the normal skin.
- Rarely, there may be a residual white mark.
- The treated areas may sometimes regrow over several months or years.
- More syringomas will grow over time.
- There is no way to prevent syringomas from growing or developing.
- There is no cream that will remove syringomas.
- Treating syringomas will not cause more lesions to grow, than would have grown in the first place.
Treatment of syringomas is not covered by OHIP or private health insurance.
A referral from a doctor is necessary to make your first appointment.
