MILIA (WHITE HEADS)
Serving Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Grimsby and surrounding areas.

Milia (White Heads)
- Are blocked pores that are commonly known as white heads.
- May be due to makeup or moisturizers.
- Heavy moisturizers commonly produce milia.
- Appear as tiny, hard white balls deep in the skin.
- May get gradually larger with time and sometimes disappear spontaneously.
- Are not due to diet.
- Are not deposits of calcium in the skin.
- Are not deposits of cholesterol in the skin.
Treatment:
General:
- Avoid getting oily products on your skin (e.g. gel, mousse, hair spray and oil).
- Do not use heavy moisturizers or creams on your face.
- Use only oily free (not water based) foundation
- Do not pick, scratch, pop or squeeze milia because this may cause scarring
Medical Treatment:
- Tretinoin prescription creams are helpful. A tiny dab the size of a pea is enough to cover the entire face. If your face becomes too dry or flaky use the cream every other night or every third night
- Vitalize peels remove dead skin cells from the skin surface. This helps to open the skin"s pores and remove milia. To learn more about Vitalize Peels click here.
- Microdermabrasion is another effective treatment for milia, especially if a person has very sensitive skin. For more information about Microdermabrasion click here.
- For cases of milia associated with acne I recommend Biomedic LHA Peels. To learn more about Biomedic peels, please click here.
Extractions:
What happens during a milia extraction treatment?
- Upon your first visit a technician will provide a free consultation. During the consultation she will explain what milia are and how they can be removed. At this point any questions can be answered regarding any concerns.
- After your free consultation the technician will call in Dr. Vignjevic. He will assess your skin and confirm that the tiny bumps are milia. He will also answer any further questions that you may have. You cannot be treated by the technician unless you are assessed by Dr. Vignjevic first.
- If you decide to go ahead with the treatment photos will be taken of the area. These photos are strictly for your chart and will not be released used without your permission.
- The removal of milia is quick and effective.
- You will lie down on your back on a treatment bed.
- The technician will cleanse and disinfect the area being treated.
- A small incision is then made onto the milia and extracted out with a small extractor tool with minimal pressure.
- You will be provided with a pamphlet of after-care instructions and the technician will recommend specific products to take care of your skin after the treatment.
