Telogen Effluvium:
General Information:
- Starts 6 to 12 months after a significant stress to the body. e.g. large weight loss, having a baby, divorce, death of a family member.
- Continues for 12 to 18 months then stops.
- The hair will regrow spontaneously.
- Is much more common in women.
- Will not cause a person to become 'bald'.
- Is not dangerous.
- Is not contagious.
- Is not due to diet.
- Does not cause scarring of the scalp.
Treatment:
- If there is not an obvious cause, blood work will be done to rule out any underlying problems. e.g. underactive or overactive thyroid.
- You may continue to style, wash, perm, colour, gel, mousse, comb, streak, highlight and cut your hair.
- Avoid tight braiding of the hair.
- A variety of lotions and shampoos are available.
