Telogen Effluvium:

General Information:

  • Starts 6 to 12 months after a significant stress to the body. e.g. large weight loss, having a baby, divorce, death of a family member.
  • Continues for 12 to 18 months then stops.
  • The hair will regrow spontaneously.
  • Is much more common in women.
  • Will not cause a person to become 'bald'.
  • Is not dangerous.
  • Is not contagious.
  • Is not due to diet.
  • Does not cause scarring of the scalp.

Treatment:

  • If there is not an obvious cause, blood work will be done to rule out any underlying problems. e.g. underactive or overactive thyroid.
  • You may continue to style, wash, perm, colour, gel, mousse, comb, streak, highlight and cut your hair.
  • Avoid tight braiding of the hair.
  • A variety of lotions and shampoos are available.
