Lichen Sclerosis et Atrophicus (L S and A) for Hamilton, Grimsby and Stoney Creek

General Information:

  • Is thought to be due to effects of male and female hormones on the skin.
  • Is not contagious.
  • Is not a sexually transmitted disease.
  • Is associated with skin that is sensitive, itchy or that burns.
  • The skin may be fragile and may tear, bruise or bleed easily.
  • Is not cancer.

Treatment:

  • Strong cortisone creams are used twice daily.
  • When the condition improves the cortisone should be stopped because they can cause further thinning of the skin.
  • In some cases non-cortisone prescription creams may be helpful. They have the advantage of not thinning the skin, but they may cause burning of the skin when they are applied.
