Hand Dermatitis (Dyshidrotic Eczema) for Hamilton, Grimsby and Stoney Creek

General Measures:

  • Wear vinyl gloves for all housework dealing with water. Some people develop an allergy to rubber or latex gloves and this can make their eczema even worse. Vinyl gloves do not cause an allergy.
  • Wear gloves whenever you are working with raw fruit, vegetables and meats as the juices from them can make eczema worse.
  • Wear thin cotton liners inside the gloves to minimize sweating.
  • While doing dry, dusty and dirty work, wear cotton gloves.
  • Avoid direct contact with strong soaps, solvents and other harsh chemicals with your skin.
  • Do not use 'antibacterial' soaps or public washroom soap.
  • Take off rings when washing your hands
  • After washing your hands gently pat them dry. Avoid vigorous rubbing
  • Avoid exposure of the hands to hair tonics, shampoos and lotions

Treatments:

  • If you have deep cracks in your skin a prescription product can be used to seal them and help them heal more quickly.
  • A variety of creams and pills are available.
  • Talk to your doctor to discuss your treatment options.
