General Information:
Bullous Pemphigoid
- Is a skin disease in which the body's immune system becomes "confused" and attacks the skin. This produces itchy red swollen areas and blisters
- Is not contagious
- Does not scar
- Is not caused by diet
- Is not herpes, shingles or due to any type of virus
- Is very itchy
- Can affect the mouth in 1/3 of patients
- Usually affects the chest, back, thighs and abdomen, but rarely affects the face
- Usually lasts several months to years
- Is not curable, but is treatable
Treatment:
- Pop the blisters daily as they form, this prevents them from spreading and becoming larger
- Apply an antibiotic ointment to the open sores
- Cortisone creams can be effective to treat mild cases
- A variety of creams and pills are available.
