General Information:

Bullous Pemphigoid

  • Is a skin disease in which the body's immune system becomes "confused" and attacks the skin.  This produces itchy red swollen areas and blisters
  • Is not contagious
  • Does not scar
  • Is not caused by diet
  • Is not herpes, shingles or due to any type of virus
  • Is very itchy
  • Can affect the mouth in 1/3 of patients
  • Usually affects the chest, back, thighs and abdomen, but rarely affects the face
  • Usually lasts several months to years
  • Is not curable, but is treatable

Treatment:

  • Pop the blisters daily as they form, this prevents them from spreading and becoming larger
  • Apply an antibiotic ointment to the open sores
  • Cortisone creams can be effective to treat mild cases
  • A variety of creams and pills are available.
